David Brin agreed: “Nitty gritty time? ‘Cyberpunk’ is nothing more or less than the best publicity gimmick to come to Speculative/Fiction in years. Cyberpunk was in many ways the turning point in science fiction. Also, there’s the argument that all technology sufficiently advanced will seem like magic to the less advanced.

Kim Stanley Robinson's epic "Mars" series is a good example. (The term itself was coined by SF author Jack Williamson, back in the 1940s.) This is a vast subgenre, whether or not its protagonist travels in space as well. This can take the form of mechanical or electronic prosthetics, such as the blind Stone’s replacement eyes in Paul Di Filippo’s “Stone Lives” (MtCA); augmentation, such as Molly’s eyes and claws in Gibson’s Neuromancer (excerpted in StRS); or modification like the Mechanists in Sterling’s “Twenty Evocations” (StRS); up to outright replacement of an entire human, as when the deceased Flatline’s personality is reproduced in a virtual construct (also in Neuromancer), or a pure artificial intelligence may even be created, such as Aleph in Tom Maddox’s “Snake-Eyes” (MtCA).

With the c-word discredited through half-witted overkill, anyone called a "cyberpunk" will have to pull their own weight now. News about science fiction publishing and coverage of new science fiction books and magazines. What is the meaning of the term here? "Spook" is slang for " spy." The pieces do fit together, but as a map of an imaginary city. Finnish writers Leena Krohn and Emmi Itäranta offer very different visions of very strange worlds. The Puppies are complaining that recent Hugo winners have been too highbrow, and argue that winners such as Anne Leckie’s smart gender-deconstruction of space opera Ancillary Justice, or John Scalzi’s witty Star-Trek-inspired metafiction Redshirts are too experimental and literary.

The first Campbell Award was presented in 1973 at the Illinois Institute of Technology. The cowboys’ proficiency does not, however, ensure their success: Slide, from within the matrix in Count Zero, for example, kills Conroy electronically while he is jacked into a telephone line; Angie Mitchell, simply by imagining the configurations of cyberspace behind her eyelids, saves Bobby from dying after he hits black ICE; and the matrix-dwelling 3Jane dislocates cowboy Tick’s shoulder, almost killing him, in Mona Lisa Overdrive.

It can't really be adequately done, and anyone reading the list is going to find their favorites are left off, or declare that the listmaker has a laughable idea of what's best and essential. In 1994, scholar Brian Stonehill suggested that Thomas Pynchon 's 1973 novel Gravity's Rainbow "not only curses but precurses what we now glibly dub cyberspace". Alien Skull Paint might be a one man operation. The planet Lusus has many characteristics of Neuromancer's dystopian world, and the cybernetic levels of existence where the AI:s live has obviously been influenced by Gibson's works.

For example, in terms of Ballard, since Storming The Reality Studio includes an excerpt from Crash (1973), it’s curious that McCaffery’s cyberpunk discography misses “Warm Leatherette” – a Crash redux – by The Normal released in 1978. While the literary quality may not be as refined as that you'd find in William Gibson's "Burning Chrome", there are quite a few excellent tales here. It’s just as easy to walk down a street in an alternate cyberspace as it is to walk down the actual physical street, and society has usually taken a sharp turn for the worse (Hafner and Markoff, 9).

This emphasis on the misfits and the malcontents is the "punk" component of cyberpunk. Just to put in my two cents; I thought that Metropolitan by Walter Jon Williams was great - it has its own brand of virtual reality - which is really hyper reality - but I don't know whether it could be called cyberpunk. Hindu tales center on that faith, but remain quite rare. (India itself has a growing native-languages SF market, however very little has been translated into English.) A few subgenre stories focus on other human faiths, whether current, in the future, or via time travel.

If we can imagine what he would actually be feeling – the mixture of elation at being proved right, relief at finally finding an answer after years of searching, and horror at what that answer actually means – then his almost-complete blankness is actually a fairly appropriate and ‘ordinary’ response to what is happening. I'll add this one when I get back from San Fran. Johnson, Brian D. "Mind games with William Gibson." Unlike cyberpunk, it builds not on information technology but on biorobotics and synthetic biology.

People who prefer nonfiction to fiction, because fiction is all made up? And yet Gibson’s Japanese conglomerates, in their collective and familial practice, nevertheless form the implicit antagonistic counterpoint to the individualist heroes. Vocalist Anne Taivanen sings a bit like Siouxsie Sioux, who's an amazon in person, by the way. [Update: moved up to main category].

It presents the story of a former rock singer named Hollis Henry who turned into a freelancer researching about locative art for Node magazine. Gibson describes Case’s experience of cyberspace in terms of the pleasure of reintegration. As opposed to the permanent night in which stories of cyberpunk and dystopia seem to take place. If I have any consolation, it's that the artisans are beginning to flourish again in the shadow of the franchises. We already live, every day, through the means of outrageous actions with unforeseeable consequences to the whole world.
