In order to separate employment growth within existing firms from that brought by firms new to the parks it is necessary to look over a period at firms sited on parks. Such data are minimal, but we do have detailed information on job growth in fifteen Aston and twenty Cambridge Science Park firms. This shows, for example, that employment growth in these firms over the year 1985–6 was 19 per cent in both Aston and Cambridge. A further source of information is the follow-up survey to UKSPA-OU-CURDS, conducted in 1990.

There is no doubt that science parks contain many firms engaged in work employing highly educated staff. The percentage of qualified scientists and engineers (QSEs) employed by park tenants is generally very high. 46 SCIENCE PARKS IN THEIR OWN TERMS Of 157 science-park establishments interviewed in 1986, eightyeight said that over 40 per cent of their staff were QSEs. In fiftynine establishments, QSEs represented over 60 per cent of staff employed. In independent firms, over half of company founders had higher degrees.

On the one hand there are, perhaps in itself surprisingly, more science parks in the north of the country than in the south, but on the other hand the parks in the south are more developed. 2 The North–South divide in science-park development (percentages in brackets) Note: The North–South divide here is demarcated by a line running from Bristol to theWash. This in general, the ‘North–South’ divide we have used throughout the book. Because of its extension into East Angelia, especially Cambridge, the ‘south’ is sometimes reffered to as the ‘south and east’ of the country.
