The Five Year Strategy for Children and Learners issued by the Department for Education and Skills (2004b) said: We want every secondary school to become an extended school, offering: Study support activities Widespread community use of the school’s facilities Family learning provided through the school. All state schools in the UK are now part of an ‘extended schools cluster’, and by 2010 will provide childcare from 8am to 6pm; a varied menu of activities, including study support; parenting support; referral to specialist support services; and wider community access to ICT, sports, arts and adult learning.
