There are instead embankments and retaining walls that separate the lots and the connecting roads. Each plot extends absolutely flat over its full area, either cut and filled between embankments, elevated on stilts or even cantilevered out to the extremities of the site over its inclined retaining wall. Come what may, a building will rarely be placed on a plot which is not flat. Thus the landscape, whether hilly or flat, will be transformed into a mosaic of irregular but flat sites and hence a threedimensional patchwork.
Rarely have functions in Japanese buildings been so tied to particular spaces as in the West. A space in the Japanese home for instance (kitchen and bathroom excepted) is not so much designated by its form but rather by the activity that it supports at a particular time. The rectilinear grid within which columns occur, the neutral decor and the capacity to amalgamate with or close off from neighbouring spaces give it a flexibility which surprises many Westerners. The very room which I am using to write these words (in a new house but built in a traditional manner) may change its function thrice within a day.
