My experience with my building project didn't teach me everything to watch out for. Much that could have gone wrong didn't! We had no strikes or major accidents. The architect and general contractor were both professionals, good and true, which is not always the case. There were many problems that we didn't encounter and those I do not address in this book. In general, we had a lucky project. One outward sign of our good fortune was the fact that two weddings resulted from our activities. The architect married the interior designer, and one of the workmen married our processing clerk.

Also, local service clubs may be willing to help. They usually have regular fund-raising projects and may be willing to donate this year's receipts to your project. Plan to fund at least 10 percent more than your architect estimates. The architect's estimate will include a contingency fund of about 10 percent of the cost, but you will need more. After construction begins, someone will think of something vital that got left out of the plans, or the contractor will suggest extras here and there that will improve something's function or appearance.
