The next chapter discusses the specific model of conflict discourse that is at the core at the study before moving on to the analysis of the films. 1 Introduction. General aims of the study To investigate linguistically the dialogue of fictional cinema means to take into account the issue of the representation of talk on the big screen, that is the way the dialogue in film echoes and reproduces real life interaction. In this specific domain, the relevance of a linguistic approach to cinema does not need to be defended.

The second part of the analysis offers two case studies and explores the theme of identity in them. Chapter 6 analyses a 1953 short film by Antonioni as an example of cinema veritè or mimetic film that revives the Neorealism of the post-war period. Centred on the idea of the self-narrative, Tentato suicidio (When Love Fails) focuses on women who narrate their suicide attempt to an interviewer. Issues of identity and self-representation are central to this film and make it the first part of an exploration of the representation of this discourse.

It presents the model of verbal conflict on which the study is based and discusses how the multiple facets of confrontation that the various films exhibit can be recomposed in a cohesive whole. The chapter finally presents the data and explains how they were collected and transcribed. Chapters Four and Five contain the analysis of talk in three film genres and follow how conflict and other facets of speech develop in and characterize various cinematic types. Chapter Four is a comparative study of comedy and melodrama from 1960s to the present.
